If you want a best of the rest then 3D Coat is the most interesting and feature packed alternative when it comes to sculpting, has some great uv and retopology tools too as a nice bonus. I’m surprised that they no longer offer a demo, they used to have one of the better ones, and once you use it (and get past the somewhat strange workflow and interface) you’ll see why it’s just so good at what it does, and is worth it. It’s a unique tool, sure there are other sculpting apps out there, from the dedicated like 3D coat and mud box through to the inbuilt tools in the major dcc’s, but none of them really can do what zbrush does. I have to agree with everyone else that zbrush is fairly priced, especially once you factor in the never ending free updates. I guess Ive learned that Zbrush is now for serious modelers only. Thanks for taking time everyone to respond. Well I'll stop raging on the Zbrush licensing structure now, and go download Sculptris and Mudbox. What if they could get 10 pro customers at $800, and 10 hobbyist at $100? I'm not sure how the demand curve for Zbrush shakes out, but I would think it would be advantageous for them to move more copies. Maybe they get 10 pro customers and 1 hobbyist at $800. I would imagine that past initial development, the only additional overhead to selling more software copies would be customer support. Obviously things like guitars and camera gear cost money to manufacture and retail. From my limited understanding, when you buy a license, you just gain the right to use that program. I don't know if the comparison to physical goods works well with software licensing. Id pay $15-20 to rent Zbrush for a month to work on a personal art project. I know everyone here hates “the cloud', but there has to be a market for rental licenses as well. Its still a shame that Zbrush isn’t as accessible as it used to be.

I did enter my school info, but they really don't seem to be picky about it.

I've had Maya 2012 for two years now, and I think can grab the 2013 version when the 2012 runs out. It looks like you can get another license when a new version comes out.
